Best movies that I watched

• Bourne Ultimatum. The best bourne / spy movie that I've ever seen. You won't get bored even for a single second. A detailed review here


• 300. Surely one of the best 'graphic novel' adaption. Excellent look, action sequences and rock in the background. Must watch.


• Die Hard 4. Frankly, I'm not a DieHard franchise and haven't scene any earlier installments either. But this movie made me buy the earlier part DVDs. Mind blowing action. And lots of tech talks too.


• Resident Evil 3. Year of sequels, I guess. The best of RE series, till date. Some awesome zombie action. Much better than 'I am Legend'. Review of the two here and here


• Life in a Metro. Truly an amazing movie. Depicts the life of Metro citizens as it is. FP Review

Worst movies that I watched

I saw more crappy movies than good movies. So, picking out the worst 5 is harder than Best 5. Anyways, here they are -

• No Smoking. Worst hindi movie I've ever seen. I was feeling like smacking my head on the monitor.


• Gandhi My Father. Donno what critics saw in this movie. I just couldn't bear it. Got a huge headache by the end of it.


• Cheeni Kum. Another acclaimed movie that I just hated. Even Nishabd was better than this. Atleast, Zia Khan was worth a watch. :p


• Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Preity disappointed me big time. Senseless plot and not so 'happening' nach-gana.


• Hostel 2. Hostel series is always over-rated. Just hated this one as well.

Some other big disappointments are - Harry Potter 5, Aaja Nachle, Bhool Bhulaiya etc. I know almost 60% people loved these movies, but they failed to impress me. HP5 was worst of all HP movies. Aaja Nachle wasn't worth Madhuri's comeback vehicle. And, Bhool Bhulaiya was complete hotchpotch for me. Attempting comdey, horror, suspense, musical - al at the same time had its cost.

Best Hindi Songs

• Tum Se Hi [Jab We Met] - Amongst the best lovey-dovey song of all times.


• Bol Naa Halke Halke [Jhoom Barabar Jhoom] - The only saving grace of that movie is this song. Hum along.


• Ke Bin Tere [Aggar] - Mithoon's music rocks the chart, once again. Awesome lyrics. Sang with passion.


• To Phir Aao [Aawarapan] - Great music. Similar to Atif Aslam genre.


• Alvida [Metro] - Put all the passion of a heart-break and sing this song.

Best Applications [Desktop / Web]

• Orkut / GTalk / Blogger. Grouped them all together as otherwise this list will become google dominated. They effected our lives like nothing else ever did.


• Netvibes. Maintaining the feeds of different sites / blogs was never this easy.


• VLC Media Player. The best media player there is. Plays all formats of media.


• Picasa. Both the Desktop application and the web album. Made photo album management so easy.


• Firefox - still rules the web scene, IE7 not-withstanding.

We were allowed to leave office by 5PM. But I stayed back till 8 as all my friends were still in their offices. Still I was 1st person to reach home. Real party started post-10PM. We didn't go out to some 'new year spcl' party. Instead some 10 friends gathered at my place and hit the floor. That was followed by lavish dinner, chicks [as in, chicken actually], beer and rocking music. 11:45. It was time to prepare to burst into 2008. A huge box of crackers came handy. We all stepped into the new year with much spark and noise, thanks to the non-stop burst of crackers. After all of them were extinguished, we settled for movies. Couldn't find anything brand new; so watched 'F4 : Rise of silver surfer' and 'Die hard 4' - back to back. It was late night and with a huge headache - it was time to hit the sack.

1st Jan - the new day of the new year. I started with buying some new stuff and giving my flat a new look. It wasn't really planned to coincide with the new year day. The official holiday facilitated it. Took 3 snazzy cots and rearranged my room. Now, it no longer looks like a "extreme bachelors' den". ;) Things are much more organized now and due to proper placement of trolley, bags n stuffs - which were all strewn in the extra room ever since shifting here- we've got a brand new dining room. Isn't that great?

Next step was cataloging my DVD collection. Replaced all the thick DVD-cases with slick ones. That made a lot of extra space in my DVD carton to accommodate more DVDs. At last count, there are 100+ DVDs with 250+ movies. WOW. Even I was shocked and thrilled. Think I'll start something like my own SeventyMM service. :p


Ohhh, New Year resolution. Well, I never really make a 'New Year Resolution' 'coz they turn out to be worse than promises of politicians on election campaigns. After a month or so, all resolutions are forgotten.

Well, that was all for New Year celebration. When back in office this Wednesday - everything is back to normal again. Again that 11 - 6 routine job. Let's hope for something 'New' here. Anyways, lemme know how was it for you? What did you do on new year eve? Leave a comment and lemme know.

The movie starts with the usual escape bid of Alice, which turns out to be her clone. She's now a sophisticated human weapon with high-psychological abilities and can control things with her mind. A little bit of supernaturalism, huh ...?? Anyways, the story doesn't make much progress this time. All you get is - Alice destroys Umbrella Corps' American facility and is on her way to the headquarters [next movie], along with lots n lots of her clones. She now knows that her blood is the cure to virus spread. 4th movie seems highly promising.

Things to watch out for in this 3rd installment is the awesome action sequences. The best one is when the convoy of survivors reaches Vegas. Can't describe it in words. Just edge of the seat, breath-taking action. Mila gave a great performance. All those maneuvers and free form fights reminded me of Prince of Persia game. Specially the Twin blade throat cut is Wow. And oh, the cinematography is just beautiful. Some great camera work and visual effects and every frame of the movie just comes alive. Never knew it'd look so good even when the world is a barren land. :p Go watch this movie - theater or get yourself a DVD.


Ahh. Welcome. Another comedy crapper of Akshay Kumar. He's now so adapt to these roles that he almost sleep walks through out the movie. He's became repeatative. Still, he manages to make us laugh. But, how many are having hearty laugh and how many are laughing just for the heck of it, is doubtful. I mean, some people in the theater were laughing their heart out even on lousy jokes. Akshay is like the new king of comedy for the masses and not laughing to his jokes is like dis-respecting the king. So, laugh anyway. Secondly, people don't want to be disappointed by a Akshay Kumar movie. So, they console themselves by enjoying every possible 'funny' scene. Thus, Akshay is now a safe bet for any producer. Public will make sure that his movie is not a flop by saying 'Wah Wah' even if they didn't really like it.

That said, let me tell you that Welcome is not a bad movie either. It's good for time-pass. And if you're watching it second time, it's gotta be for Katrina Kaif. She's hot like hell and more pretty than ever. There's not even a single frame where she's anything less than an angel. Anyways, the movie. It's again copy of some Hollywood movie, [Forgot the name]; just as all Nadiadwala movies are these days. It's full of forced comedy, with just a few exceptions. Whilst the 'stirring in hand' road accident scene was 'forced', the 'crematorium' scene was really funny. All that confusion surrounding the dead body was really situational comedy that makes me laugh. Climax was again very cliche' with all the chaos. I just hate that 'life in balance on edge of cliff' formula. Firoz Khan is totally wasted here. Nana gave a few nice performances. Don't have high expectations. Go watch this movie just to relax.


And, some off-topic [non-review] observations here. We watched Welcome in Rex theater. It's a blot on the face of Brigade Road. Even my little home town cinema hall was better than this. Still, Rex makes a huge profit every week; thanks to it's location and seat-availability. Situated at the prime location of Brigade road, the heart of the IT city, and surrounded by so many MultiNational retail-chain marts - Nike, McDonald, CafeCoffee Day, Pizza corner, Barista, Planet M and many many more. The biggest crowd puller of the entire city. If anyone wants to see a movie, the nearest option is Rex. Though Inox [@ Garuda mall] is not very far, tickets for current show is rarely available there. Thus, Rex is doing a brisk business, even-though it lacks in service quality.
Moral of the story : It doesn't matter who you are or how u are. What matters is - where you are. :)

And oh, I went to Rex almost after a year. Last time, I was there on my B'day with some friends - watching Dhoom 2. That was one of the most happy day of my life. While watching 'Welcome', I was remembering that dear friend who got separated by time and distance. Some memories - die hard.


Anyway, one more movie that I watched just today is - Saawariya. This movie was among the most eagerly awaited movie of the year; but when it released this Diwali - all the critics just ripped it apart. I didn't get a chance to watch it a until now. And, am I again angry on those headless silly critics? :@ This movie isn't half that crappy as it is made out to be. In fact, in some sequences, it touches the heart. Specially the climax. Every one can identify with this, remember their 1st broken heart. Maybe all the sets look artificial n stuff, but still the movie doesn't deserve the bad treatment it got. After thorough search of the kitchen - all I found was onions and tomato. What the hell...!! What do I do with these? But with nothing else at hand, that's what I used. Made something like a stew / soup of tomato and onion. Though it didn't look good - it tasted great. :$ Maybe because I was damn hungry. Learnt my lesson - always keep some provisions in kitchen - atleast one Maggie pack.

So, 1st thing on Sunday - I did some kitchen shopping, primarily some 'emergency' eatables; Maggie, Biscuits, chips. They could've lasted for a week. But, when the food is in kitchen - who's stopping me...?? :$ Half the provision is already consumed. It's still depleting as I write this. Go figure.

Ok, some more laughing stock for you. Last week we had a friendly mini 20-20 match with live commentary, own press coverage et al. :D The photographer was a little ameture and thanks to that, we got some really funny snaps. Oh, another high point of last week was the free color photo prints from ZoomIn. That really made my week. Every now and then I'm taking out the snaps from my closet and peering at them. I'm like a child who's got his 1st B'day gift. :) When everything is going digital, there are some things that are better in the conventional way. Just as a handwritten mail delivered to your doorstep is better than an email; a hardcopy photograph is better than a digital photo on your computer screen. Let me go one step down from International Cricket; let’s focus on our domestic Cricket. I’m not sure how many of that ‘99%’ cricket fans follow Ranji Cricket and can recall the names who represent their state in Ranji Trophy in a single go. If we can manage the names, it may be too hard to say where our state stands except last four teams. I’m not sure how many of us know that 21 years old Manoj Tiwari and 29 years old Ranadeb Bose of Bengal were the highest run getter and highest wicket taker respectively in the last season’s domestic Cricket. The names like Amol Mazumdar of Mumbai and Kanwaljit Singh of Hyderabad, who are at the edge of retirement from Cricket remained inside the empty stadium as nobody cheered for them except those 30 white dressed gentlemen.

If there is an International Cricket match we can see there is a long queue 24 hrs before opening the ticket counter, people do not mind spending the night in the queue. Nobody minds if you just sign in and sign out saying “Wow!! there is a India-Pakistan match yaar”. If it is a domestic match? Very few of us know who is playing and for what they are playing in an empty stadium. It is as if those 30 white dressed gentlemen have no work in the world they are just doing time pass. We don’t even realize that those 30 white dressed gentlemen are in the way of making another Sachin, Sourav, Rahul, Yuvraj or Dhoni for whom we will cry if they fail and we will not hesitate to spoil our voice by cheering if they win.

When we see a new face into Indian team we keep wondering whether he bowls or bats until he figures in last eleven. Just few day back when Rohit Sharma lifted last ball six of Van der Wath and played a superb innings, very next match we could see a girl holding a placard ‘Rohit Sharma, will you marry me’. He became a national hero. A complete TOI page on him. This same Mumbai lad Rohit Sharma once smashed a 45 balls century in domestic T20 Cricket, he is the only T20 centurion in Indian Cricket. I guess not all ‘99%’ knew this before that innings.

The media coverage for International match - I don't need to say anything; but for domestic Cricket - it's just ‘8 cm X 12 cm’ area in the last page to cover at least four matches. Live coverage for domestic Cricket is awful; the broadcaster uses the minimum optimal cameras to cover the game. The energy level of the commentator is as if he was on fast for last two days and just taking care of the equipments. Once I had the privilege of watching Assam-Bengal Ranji Group match. The pitch was slightly better than our clay roads and I guess even cows had free access in that multi-purpose stadium when there is no match.

Yes, BCCI has increased the prize money for domestic Cricket. These domestic Cricket heroes manage to get a job in some good public sectors. Is money the only reason we all are crazy for Cricket?

Dear friends, my intention is not to hurt anybody’s sentiments towards the game or doubt anybody’s Cricketing knowledge. After yesterday’s topic in the intranet I thought - do we really love Cricket or we just love our Cricketers? Are we real Cricket Fan or just fan of International Cricket?

Sandeep Sharma :Definitely !! It is surprising we do not love our cricket but kinda love media attention.
Wherever media focuses attention, we start following that. It is also in our mind. We are biased against domestic cricket. Organizers are to be blamed for this, who neither publish schedule nor market or advertise it well. Also, they do not provide good pitches and stadium to domestic cricketers.

May be ICL this year could bring about those changes. Like we see new enthusiasm on hockey side where India is beating all opponents by huge margin.....

The national hockey team is genuinly miffed about all this gung-ho. While all the politicians are busy showering cash, rewards and other perks on the cricketers, the hockey team is pushed back into the darkness. Did they receive even an iota of the welcome that the cricket team got that immobilized Mumbai? Leave aside the rewards. After drawing flak from several sections for their step-motherly treatment, the state governments are 'considering' rewarding these hockey players. What a shame....!!! Why do we [specially politicians] always need an external source to jerk us up to our senses? But are they really awake now? Govt.s are gonna reward the hockey team only 'coz they 'asked for it' and to ward off the outcry. Are they really thrilled and proud of their success? And the public making the outcry - are they genuinely interested in Hockey? Are they gonna watch any upcoming hockey match with as much enthusiasm as they show in a cricket match? Ask yourself.

And if you ask me, I'm also not interested in hockey or most of the other sports either. Then why am I being so much touchy and vocal here? Well, that's because I'm an Indian. That's what we do. Begani Shaadi mei abdulla deewana. or - Behti ganga mei haath dhona. If everybody is talking about something and you don't, you feel like left out and idiot. Even if we don't know what's all the fuss is about, we just love to raise our voices and make a 'contribution' to the cause. And that's the end of what we do; make noise and disperse. We don't see to it that the cause is met. "At least I did what I could. Rest is upto the leaders/politicians". Wow. We just look upto the sufferer with eyes of pity and wish that they get a better deal. Same here regarding the Indian hockey team.

We are Indian only on 1 occasion - when we are at war with Pakistan - either on front or on cricket field.

The main reason for their ignorance is, no-one and nothing is Indian in India. There are Bangali, Bihari, Gujrati, Madrasi and so on; but no one's Indian. Is anyone in it from my state? Such is the state of affairs here 'coz such is our upbringing. And it's not that we look upto cricket as a great sport. We follow cricket 'coz of its glamor quotient. Glamor is the reason why now-a-days some people are taking note of Tennis, thanks to Sania. Suddenly a lot of people are interested in tennis, or better still - pretty faces and delicate curves on tennis court. Apart from some genuine die-hard F1 racing fans, how many follow F1? Karthikeyan was/is having a though time finding sponsors to finance his F1 dreams. Anyone wanna talk about football?

The sudden interest in Hockey was brought about by 'Chak De India'. I'm baffled by how movies drive our outlook in India. It's like we are all blind and movies are leading us cross the road. When Rang De Basanti released, we all took up protesting against 'political and judicial monarchy'. Protest against Reservation and Jasica Lal case are testimony to that. After 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' - it was time for Gandhigiri madrush. It took the whole India one movie to remember the basic foundation of the nation. And now 'Chak De India' to value Hockey or other sport forms in general. But as always, the flame is doused within a couple of months' span. In the latest case, the fade out was accelerated by T20 extravaganza. So, everything is 'back to normal' - as it always has been.

Now when I look back at my life so far, I realize how blessed I've been to get those few great teachers. The 1st one who comes to my mind is the headmaster of my kindergarten school. He had spotted something special in me and took special care of me. Mom says the 1st thing I used to do after returning from school was doing my home-work. Guess I was a good student then. I don't really remember much of these. But there's one incident that I still remember as if it had happened just yesterday. It was after I had finished my kindergarten. One day that head master came to meet me at home and told papa "He's a special child. Take special care of him. He'll make it really big someday". Papa was so proud of me that day and so was I. I was bluntly telling everybody that day what he had said.

My next experience with teachers wasn't this pleasant though. I was in class 3 and there was this bully in my class but I didn't pay him much hid. One day he threatened one boy in the class to do as he says or else .... That other boy suddenly stood up in mid class, clutching his stomach and said "Sir, Bikram just punched me hard in stomach". That teacher was a relative of this boy. He just thrashed me for a long time, not listening to a single word I said. By the time he let go off me, I was all bright red - head to toe, as if I'll start bleeding any moment. On my way back home, curious onlookers made me feel sick. Everybody's 1st impression was obviously 'punished for some unforgivable mischief'. Through their eyes, I saw myself as a criminal. I kept running on road, shaking, till I reached home and broke down in tears. Mom went numb on seeing me and papa immediately rushed me to a hospital. A case was filed against that teacher. But he wasn't even questioned by police. He was let go. They said 'he just did his duty. Corporal punishment is a part of school life'. That was when I started hating the word 'teacher'.

Now a days, there's one or the other news of harsh corporal punishment every other day. Most people just skip such news, turning a blind eye. But ask someone who's been through it. Whenever there's one such news, I still feel the tearing sensation of canes raining on my skin. WCD is proposing some strict rules against such barbarism. Some people are opposing it saying 'that will ruin the tender relation between teachers and their pupils'. But what have they got to say about the total mental break down of a child thrashed in the name of punishment?


And now I'm all boiling up again. I actually wanted to write some nice memorable interactions with my teachers; about how Jeevan sir was like a father figure for me, and how sorry I was when I had compelled Vishwas sir to shout at me in mid class and later apologize for no mistake of his. But now that I remembered my class 3 incident, my mood is ruined. Just want to wrap up and grab some coffee. Will tell you the rest some other day.

First one is Preety. Well, she is no less than Aki either, character wise. She's big time man-eater herself. Dated more than half of the hot shots of our batch and made out with at least a dozen. No one could hold onto her for more than half of a month. Only exception being her latest date - our Aki. It's being said now that she's finally serious for a steady relationship. But look - with whome..? All her past dates .... all they were madly in love with her but she never gave their feelings a damn, broke their hearts and fluttered to the next Victim when they were of no more use - physically or anyways. But now, she's serious about Aki and wants to marry him. But for our Aki - knowing all 'bout her past affairs - she's nothing more than a wh**e. He gives us vivid description of his 'quality time' with her and makes fun of her. It seems quite evident sometimes that she knows all these, but still she clings onto him.

Before preety, Aki was dating her friend Sweetu. She's a nice and friendly gal. She was aware of Aki's flamboyant image but still proposed him thinking 'my love will change him'. ( caution gals, that never happens). So, Aki took good care of this opportunity and they started seeing each other. Every alternate night, she slept with him and soon became entirely caught in the web. Then one fine day, Preety got interested in Aki and he shifted to the new babe. Sweetu was so shocked to realize that her best friend stole her boyfriend. But still she kept nagging Aki - 'feel my luv' - kind of emotions. When we were shifting our base from college at the end of our college term, she came to the station to see him off and pleaded 'give me one more chance'; while all others were laughing at her.

But before all these happened, there was this gal named Rehana. Honestly, I don't know much 'bout the kind and depth of relationship they had. All I know is that one day she got to know all about him, so he broke up with her. But Rehana still calls him up at least ten times a day. Aki abuses her verbally with each and every word she speaks, all in our presence with cell speaker on. But she never gives up. No matter how much he bad-mouths her, she calls up every day. She acts so pathetic, yaar; she acts like a slave, with no self respect. I wonder what Aki did to her that forces her to stoop to such level everyday.

Aki has shifted his base from Bangalore to another metro of India. Roping in another gal. The point I'm trying to convey here is that gals are not 'satisfied' with a nice n sober guy. They find spoilt and 'Macho' guy - who gives the world 'a damn', and 'f**k the law' is whose mantra, much more dependable.

They think they will provide them greater security as others won't mess with this guy - and evidently they have lotsa money which they can spend on her. And being the girlfriend of the 'Hot' guy gives them a high. So, there's no 'Dil ka mamla' as far as love of a girl is concerned. All they care about is bank balance and hotness quotient. As Dilawar puts it - "girls do fall in love at first sight. not with you but your wallet."

This was is the best thing that I ever bought from my own money. [ My PC was bought by dad ]. This handset has lots lots more than the last one - almost everything that I wanted. A good enough cam, Walkman player and FM, a 512 MB card that ensures that I never run out of space for more music. The extra stereo speakers bundled with it are just mind-blasting with its high bass. And even FM can be played in speaker mode. And I'm not talking about the handset speaker. Any speaker can be plugged into it's headphone port. Hence, when I go back home at the end of working day, I just connect my PC speakers to it and turn on the radio - which feels as if I'm having a WorldSpace radio in my room. The earphone, or earplug as it is called, is the best I've come across till now. It fits perfectly in my ears. Not like those wide disc headed earphones that keep pushing the boundaries and keeps falling out. And ofCourse, the look of w810i is just WOW. It turned out to be a good buy for my 12.7 grands.

But then, it's not flawless either. The default handset speaker is not that good. When I play the Walkman through the default speakers, the sound output is just Okayish, not good enough for a music enthusiast. I have to use the earplugs or the extra speakers for the THUMP. So much for it's "the Thump is HERE" claim.

Speaking of sound, the output from earpiece when you're on a call is also not satisfactory. I have to strain my ears to listen to what the person on the other side is saying. Hell is when you're in a noisy environ, say on road. Again, earplug is the option. It even has a few deficiencies as compared to LG 2630. For instance, to read next or previous msg in inbox, I have to go back to inbox and select next / prev msg and then 'View', whereas in LG handset, I can do the same from the msg window itself. i.e, when reading a msg, I could simply press 'right' button to read the next msg. And, with 810i, I can only set different ring-tones for different person, but not different msg tones, which was conveniently possible with LG 2630.

Well, those are the few highs and lows with the w810i. And if U ask me, whether I'm satisfied with w810i, I'll say YES. Even with its small few drawbacks, it's a good gadget to posses. I am no longer bored at the bus-stop, thnx to the FM and I can capture anything I like with the cam and share it real time. Like this news of BlackBerry. I just shot it with my w810i, uploaded it on my server and am now writing 'bout it. Feels like live reporting. And oh, about this BlackBerry. Don't look for a user review of it here 'coz I haven't used it yet. And it's not mine forever. :( It is given to me to check the process of mail forwarding from Lotus Notes to mobile email client. So, it's with me for couple of weeks. After that, it's Hasta La Vista. So, till then, let's rock with it. Meanwhile, lemme know which mobile handset do U think is the best. Frankly speaking, I don't mind the spoilers. Afterall, I'm not gonna buy the book pretty soon, if I decide to buy it at all. [ I'm hoping someone will gift it to me ;) ] And, there's this urge to know what happens at last. So, this spoiler serves my purpose. This doesn't mean that I won't read the book now. Eventhough I know the end now, I don't know the tids-n-bits of the story. Every page of this final book is going to be a treasure trove. With 4 horcruxes still to be discovered - it's a long ride. So, I'd definately gobble the whole book when I get my hands on it.

I had this terrible urge to post the spoiler link here so that all HP enthusiasts can read it and quench their thrust. But then thought better of it. Others might not share my viewpoint about spoilers. And eventhough they might not want to read the spoiler, the presence of the link will eventually tempt them to click on it - thus spoiling their fun. And in the end, they are gonna curse me to hell. Pheeew. I surely don't want this fury. So, withholding this info. Instead, am launching this poll. Voice your opinion on this poll. Lemme know do U want to read this authentic HP7 spoiler. OKAY. So, here is the BIG question. Who is right here ...?? The WCD for taking up the cause of Working Women who do face a lot of harassment at workplace or SFF who are fighting for the Men who are exploited under such laws... !! WCD has a valid point - that women at all walks of life, specially at workplaces are subjected to sexual harassment and they do need a safeguard to protect them. But I guess this is just half the truth. Men are not spared. In today's age, gals no longer stay away from flirting with their seniors to gain promotions n all. And those who think that the story told in "Aitraz" is just a filmy story, think again. THIS IS happening. So, should men also sought the implementation of a similar law for themselves?

On one hand, we talk about gender equality n all. And on the other, when it's about opportunities, there is uproar to give women special treatment by portraying them as weaker sex. I guess Swarup Sarkar is right asking "the government should bring a cross-gender law to prevent any kind of harassment at workplaces"


I am a newbee in this corporate world. So maybe I don't know the twists n turns of this world. But what I've seen here in past 6 months, I'm pretty much sure that women are not the only victim.
